Help if you are dealing with an addicted love one

1. Do you think they would be willing to talk to someone?

2. Sometimes an intervention is helpful.

       From the MayoClinic:

"... It's best if you consult with a qualified professional counselor, an addiction professional, a psychologist, a mental health counselor, a social worker or an interventionist to help you organize an effective intervention. An intervention is a highly charged situation with the potential to cause anger, resentment or a sense of betrayal."

Dustin Williams, "Certified Interventionist and Case Manager"

However, there is disagreement concerning the effectiveness of interventions in the recovery community.

"How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s

commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or

force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone

to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven.

Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and

can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.

3. Sometimes when the family members start going to Al-Anon the alcoholic sees the family moving on and wakes up to the fact that they need to do something about their problem.

4. Denial can be broken with facts;

     Work issues

     Family concerns

Pointing out that they can’t be feeling that good if drinking that much.

5. If they do not have insurance there are programs that can help.

6. Do they have insurance?  Call the number on the back of the card and ask where they can go.

7. Medical detox can be very important for both alcohol and benzoid addiction.  Death can result from trying to abruptly stop without detox.
